The Settings Menu Most People Treat Like a No-Entry Zone
Your phone's settings menu runs dozens of screens deep. Most people know where to find Wi-Fi and display brightness — and stop there. If you regularly experience dropped calls or muffled audio at home or in buildings with weak signal, enabling Wi-Fi Calling can make a significant difference — provided your carrier supports it and your plan includes it. Carriers don't always highlight which features are included in a plan, so it's worth confirming with your provider before assuming it's active.

Battery Usage by App
Under Battery, most phones show a detailed breakdown of which apps consumed power over the past 24 hours or more. This view often reveals surprises — a navigation app running in the background, a social media app refreshing constantly, or a service you rarely open burning through charge.
From the same screen, you can restrict background activity for specific apps, which prevents them from using battery or data when you're not actively using them. This is more precise than blanket battery-saver modes, which can interfere with notifications and performance across the board.

Accessibility Features
The Accessibility menu is frequently ignored by users who don't think it applies to them. In practice, several features here are useful to almost anyone. Display size and font scaling let you make text more comfortable to read without changing the look of the entire OS. Color correction and contrast settings can ease eye strain in certain lighting. Sound balance controls help if one earlobe is more sensitive than the other.
One particularly underused feature: Magnifier or Magnification, which turns your camera into a reading magnifier on demand. It's faster than downloading a separate app and works without a network connection.

Private DNS
DNS (Domain Name System) is the service your phone uses to translate website addresses into the actual server locations behind them. By default, your phone uses your carrier's DNS, which may log your browsing queries. Switching to a privacy-focused DNS doesn't make you anonymous online, but it does mean your carrier's DNS servers aren't the ones logging which sites your phone looks up. It's a minor change with a low barrier to entry for anyone curious about reducing data exposure at the network level.

Developer Options (Android)

The most practical: Running Services, which shows exactly what's active in the background right now; and Wi-Fi Scan Throttling controls. There's also an animation speed setting — reducing or disabling transition animations makes the phone feel noticeably snappier without any hardware changes. Keep in mind that some Developer Options settings can affect stability if changed without understanding their purpose, so it's wise to look up any unfamiliar toggle before enabling it.

Clearing an individual app's cache (done through the app's storage settings, not a global button) frees space without deleting your data or preferences. This is different from clearing app data, which resets the app to a fresh state. If a specific app is behaving erratically, clearing its cache alone is often a good first troubleshooting step before reinstalling.
