Don't Blame the Carrier Yet

Dropped calls, slow data, and dead zones are genuinely frustrating — but blaming your carrier is often the first conclusion people jump to, and it's not always the right one. Signal problems can come from your device, your physical surroundings, your account settings, or a temporary network event. Each of those has a different fix.

This checklist walks you through a logical sequence of checks so you can figure out what's actually going on before you call customer support or switch carriers. Work through each group in order — the most common, easiest-to-fix causes come first.

Check Your Device First

Toggle Airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds, then toggle it off to force your phone to reconnect to the nearest tower. Must

What Your Results Tell You

Once you've worked through the checklist, you should have a clearer picture. If problems disappear after toggling Airplane mode or updating your phone's software, the issue was local and temporary — no carrier change needed. If signal is consistently poor only inside a specific building, that's a physical obstruction problem, not a network gap.

If you find your signal is consistently weak across multiple outdoor locations where your carrier's map shows strong coverage, that's a different conversation. Coverage maps show predicted signal based on tower locations and terrain modeling — they don't account for every real-world variable. Throttled Data Looks Like Bad Coverage

If you've used a large amount of data in a billing cycle, your carrier may reduce your speeds as a network management measure — especially on lower-tier plans. This reduced speed can feel identical to poor signal but has nothing to do with tower coverage. Always check your data usage in your account app before concluding your network connection is the problem.
